Katarina began skating at age five. old. Her talent soon became apparent and she was accepted into Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. In this school, she was introduced to their coach Jutta Muller. Witt was second place at the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. It was her first appearance. Then, she was dominating the sport thanks to her elegance and grace. Olympic victory Katarina Wit won gold in ice skating for women during Sarajevo Winter Games 1984. The free skater lost however, she took home the gold medal in the figure that was compulsory as well as her short programme. Witt was the first female to be crowned champion in women's and men's figure-skating in the past since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt had a great deal of success as a performer, but she returned to her sports in order to compete during the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. In spite of not receiving the gold medal, she won over the audience. Witt got her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame on the 15th of April, 1995.
